Photographers spend more time behind the camera than in front, which leads to the reason for my choice in photo. I was one of many who learned the art of painting with light as a member of the Light Stalkers Photography Club. Andre was our intrepid leader who generously and patiently shared his immense knowledge of the science and art behind taking great photographs. I have so many photos that I associate with Andre, but as I scanned my collection, it was obvious we were busy capturing smiles other than our own. This photo resulted from a Lightstalker challenge called Red. Colour assignments were one of my favorites and I will never forget the joy and laughter as members of our little club shared their inspirations. Andre’s voice is forever imprinted in my brain whenever I hold a camera to my eye, including such wisdom as, “The best camera is the one you have with you!”
This is not to say my friendship with Andre only revolved around photography. Andre and I actually met while working at Science Alberta Foundation in 2000, another organization that greatly benefited from Andre’s IT talents. Over the last 20 years, he has grown into a trusted friend whose depth of empathy and kindness places him in rare company. Andre, you make people feel safe and cherished, and this is why my dear friend, we will carry you in our hearts and minds for the rest of our lifetimes.
